Led Zeppelin: Physical Graffiti – An Album Under Review | Led Zeppelin

Described by Rolling Stone’s Jim
Miller as “the band’s Tommy,
Beggars Banquet and Sgt Pepper
rolled into one”, Led Zeppelin’s
sixth album was their first release
on their self-established Swan
Song label, and the first album in
history to go platinum on advance
orders alone.

This prodigious double-album
was an inventive mix of
heavy blues, soul, folk, psych,
acoustic and their trademark
bludgeoning rock. It
demonstrated a freedom born
of success and, for many, was
seen as Led Zeppelin’s best
work. While the enthusiasm and
expertise of this film’s
contributors – including Ron
Nevison, Physical Graffiti
engineer during the recording
sessions at Headley Grange,
and former Yardbird Chris Dreja
– makes for engaging viewing,
at times this DVD becomes
rather too reliant on them and
there is, perhaps due to lack of
availability, very little in terms of
original LZ footage.

Nonetheless, the result, which
is more of a dialogue than a
documentary, does give a
thorough track-by-track
discussion of the album and an
interesting look at its
background and influences.

The bonus material is a little
disappointing, and Nevison’s
comparison of Graffiti with
Quadrophenia doesn’t quite
work. A worthwhile main
feature, but perhaps it would
work better as an audio.

Stiff Little Fingers

The audience has lost none of
its enthusiasm for Belfast’s
finest, and with Jake Burns and
Ali McMordie from the original
line-up still going strong, there’s
every reason to believe they’ll
be around for many years to
come. Resplendent in white
rhinestone shirt, frontman
Burns gave it his all. From the

In British rock’n’roll terms, if
Cliff was a watered-down Elvis
then Vince Taylor was an
equally troubled and rebellious
Gene Vincent. Beloved by The
Clash (who covered Brand New
Cadillac) and David Bowie (who
used him as an inspiration for
Ziggy Stardust), he was clearly
too much of an outsider to be
completely taken …

a new season in 2012 with the mid-tour departure of lead singer Anette Olzon, and this collection records the off-stage shenanigans captured during their hastily re-routed road trip and triumphant arrival at the Teutonic metal Valhalla of the Wacken festival.

The last thing you’d expect
from Detroit’s noise-heads is
a collection of 60s/70s sugarpop
tracks, but, then again,
perhaps being contrary is
central to being in The
Dirtbombs in the first place.
The band comes closest to type on Hey! Cookie, a lightly
garage-rock outburst with
a hint of the sinister among
