The Quick - Untold Rock Stories

Blighted dreams of rock stardom from mid-70s LA

Does just what it says, Untold Rock Stories chronicles the neglected/forgotten tale of LA’s power-pop glam combo The Quick. Protges of Kim Fowley around about the time he was finalising the launch of The Runaways, they signed to Mercury and recorded their sole album, Mondo Deco, at The Beach Boys’ studio with onetime member of Sparks Earle Mankey in the all important producer’s hot seat.

Upon its release, Mondo Deco flopped spectacularly and was promptly forgotten about. In asense, that is the starting point for this collection of odds and sods. The first half is given over to the original Fowley-produced Mercury demos from May 1976, recorded before he presumably lost interest and set off in search of more lucrative projects. The remainder comes in the form of Elektra demos recorded the following year and eventually released to members of the band’s fan club as the Alpha/Beta EP, plus two live tracks recorded at LA’s Starwood club in 1976.

Effectively everything you ever needed to hear from The Quick, it’s big on melody and trashy delivery: pop with power, overall reminiscent of the house sound of Greg Shaw’s Bomp! label.
