Though this compilation runs to less than 24 minutes, it’s as perfect a representation of the early 60s Chicago R&B/soul sound as you will find anywhere. Since 1959 Major Lance (yes, his real name) had been erratically trying to break out as a singer, but it wasn’t until he hit with the dance song The Monkey Time (sadly not included here) that he really got going. This album’s title song was the follow-up and deservedly left him with a lasting “golden oldie”.
There are six Curtis Mayfield songs here, including some Impressions covers with Gypsy Woman and It’s All Right, and a run at Chris Kenner’s Land Of 1,000 Dances. I’m The One Who Loves You is probably the most satisfying, with its strong femme back-ups and typically attractive Chicago high-pitched brass interventions. Lance went on to cut several more aggressive Northern soul faves after this period, but many will love this early sound as well. Major Lance CDs don’t come along too often, so you’re advised to grab this one while it’s around.
