Various Artists - Top 40 1965-1974

Live footage galore from music TV’s infancy

To honour their 25th anniversary, BR Music have compiled a selection of some of the best music to be featured on the Veronica Top 40 radio programme in Holland between 1965 and 1974. As you’d expect from the company, Europe’s finest exponent of archive DVD/CD releases, there are plenty of rarely-seen, quite wonderful clips on offer.

Among them there’s Louis Armstrong performing What A Wonderful World on BBC Television in 1968, Lindisfarne delivering Meet Me On The Corner on The Old Grey Whistle Test, 1971, and Elton John singing Tiny Dancer on Sounds For Saturday in 1972. Also featured are performance clips of Kiki Dee, Dave Dee and co, The Tremeloes, Melanie, Lou Christie, The Fortunes, Aphrodite’s Child, Edison Lighthouse and Leapy Lee, among others. Quite possibly, however, the highlight is the original promo film for The Beach Boys’ 1969 masterpiece I Can Hear Music.

The picture quality is first class throughout, with an audio quality to match. As well as a most informative 12-page, highly colourful booklet, the package also comes complete with a matching audio CD of the tracks. A very nice double-disc release indeed.
