Faith No More - The Very Best Definitive Ultimate Greatest Hits Collection

Still the best band ever

Sneer ye not. Though a Faith No More best of came out in 2004, Rhino’s compilers have swerved any accusations of cashing in on the band’s recent reformation by adding some killer bonus cuts to this album (and giving it an ironic name). The first disc is an obvious runthrough of the San Franciscan quartet’s big hits, from the punk years (We Care A Lot) via the funk-metal stuff (Epic, Midlife Crisis, From Out Of Nowhere) to the prog genius (Everything’s Ruined, Caffeine, Ashes To Ashes, Ricochet). If you haven’t heard these songs for a while, you’ll be surprised at how fresh they sound today.

The bonus disc is sweeter still, with 10 B-sides and rarities. Standouts include Sweet Emotion (originally a 1989 Kerrang! flexi), New Improved Song (from Sounds in ’88) and Light Up & Let Go, the Ashes To Ashes bonus cut. If you’re seething that Jim Martin hasn’t been invited to join FNM for this year’s round of festivals, soothe yourself with these immortal songs – among the best the 90s had to offer, hands down.
