Writing On The Wall - The Power Of The Picts

Edinburgh heavies get complete overhaul

The Power Of The Picts

Moving from their native Edinburgh to London brought these Hammond-driven heavies to a more sympathetic audience. Subsequently, they became a popular draw at the Middle Earth Club, where their furious blend of organ, axe and vocal went down a treat. Like other unsung heavy prog acts such as T2 or Elias Hulk, Writing On The Wall, in retrospect, do labour the point. Unlike some of the others though, they had a genuine and scintillating strangeness as well as a genuinely soulful singer, Linne Paterson.

The ridiculous use of Scotland The Brave at the beginning of Bogeyman is testament to their theatrical pretence, but it’s on the lengthy Aries that it all comes together most convincingly, with a Doors-like organ riff providing the eerie undercurrent for the layered rock-out on top. Included here are both sides of a 1969 single, the B-side of which is another piece of bizarre musical theatre, Lucifer Corpus. Disc Two brings the rest of their scattered catalogue together for the first time but it gets progressively less impressive as the years go by. The inclusion of their bona fide classic Buffalo, however, and a hidden demo of the same just about make this a cut above.
