To celebrate the release of Jimi Hendrix: Live At Monterey on CD, DVD and HD-DVD, fully remastered with loads of interview bonuses, this special edited screening was followed by a Gary Moore tribute to Hendrix’s finest moments, featuring Primal Scream drummer Darrin Mooney and former Art Of Noise bassist Dave Bronze. They kicked off with Purple Haze, and immediately noticeable was the role of the bass, allowing the guitar to solo; Moore’s band got this right, so many others don’t. And while Gary’s guitar work was pretty close, and the solos fantastic, the lack of fuzz or feedback gave a much cleaner and uncluttered sound. After Foxey Lady, he announces, “This isn’t from the US, this music is from London,” in his best Cockney accent. The Wind Cries Mary and Never Stand Next To The Fire are among the set, along with some extensive workouts. Gary clearly enjoyied himself, smiling and sweating between the grimacing. The band went off, to give way to drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox, to much applause. They really didn’t need any introduction, but had their say, joking along the way. A few more songs (also featuring Gary, with Gary and Billy sharing vocals. The bass was a little loose, but Red House and Hey Joe sounded good). The opening band then completed the night with Voodoo Chile, to round off a fitting tribute from one guitar legend to another.
