The title of this release reflects the 1989 US tour pairing Vaughan and Jeff Beck. It’s been previously available on bootleg as Last Farewell, among other titles, and comprises 11 numbers culled from Stevie’s sets on that tour’s last two dates in November. The cover legend, The Radio Broadcasts 1999, refers to its broadcast by Westwood One, though whether in 1999 rather than ’89 is debatable. The heart sinks, too, when co-writer Doyle Bramhall is miscredited consistently as Bramhalm.
But while this release’s packaging may be basic, to say the least, the music is well worth your attention – if you ignore the overdubbed crowd applause common to such radio shows. Best of the bunch are the two covers of Superstition and Voodoo Chile, but familiar SRV originals such as Tightrope, Life Without You and The House Is Rockin’ are also dispatched with the expected gusto.
No Jeff Beck here, then, but on the basis of the music on offer his set must have been something. And, as most SRV live material is from the Texan’s early career, few fans will turn this down.
