There have been many different bands over the years using the Dynamics moniker, and these ones who worked the Pacific Northwest scene in the 60s were arguably the best-known. With a young Larry Coryell in their ranks for over a dozen of the generous 47 tracks assembled here, the band made waves with mostly attacking trumpet/sax-led instrumentals.
In 1961, vocalist Jimmy Hanna joined and helped broaden the earlier frat band repertoire to include more soul and hard-driving R&B. The group also aimed to cover the bases with gentler, more sophisticated material to widen their audience. The breadth here goes from a strong version of Eddie Holland’s Leaving Here to the late night smooch of Misty via Hanna’s easy take on Goffin/King’s Hey Girl. Yet it’s the power, professionalism and variety of the instrumental tracks that really steal the show here, with some great tunes from some of the best writers around demonstrating the group’s talent at choosing material as well as playing it. The sleevenotes tell the story, making this a very attractive package for instro and soul/R&B fans. Find out more at wwwbolorecords.com.
