An impressive telling of the anarcho-punk story

The Day The Country
Died: The DVD

This DVD accompanies Ian Glasper’s book of the same name, the follow-up to his Burning Britain tome that examined the early 80s UK punk scene. However, unlike the slightly shoddy DVD that partnered Burning Britain, here Roy Wallace has put together a full-on documentary that does his subject full justice. Glasper himself is, of course, interviewed, along with members of Crass, Subhumans, Flux Of Pink Indians, Chumbawamba, Conflict and Amebix, among others. Alongside the included live and video performances, the picture is further expanded by an array of artwork, photos and footage from previous films.

Anarcho-punk was perhaps a natural progression from punk’s original ethos, concentrating on specific subjects, rather than the often ambiguous rebellion of the first wave. Many, however, found it altogether too monochrome and restricting. What’s refreshing here is that Wallace includes the views of the likes of Flowers In The Dustbin’s Gerard Evans, who had those same doubts, despite recording for the Crass label. With the aim of celebrate a worthy and influential wing of punk, this DVD succeeds admirably.
