Various Artists - The Birth Of Surf

Let there be surf, quoth Leo Fender

instrumental compilation the average non-specialist would ever need, because it combines the key hits with an intelligent selection of harder to find cuts. Having said that, you’ve got to be a fan of the mostly predictable form of early 60s guitar instrumentals to get through the 26 tracks in one hit.

For the cognoscenti, the granddaddy of the form, Duane Eddy, is here with Ramrod, with Dick Dale’s Miserlou, The Chantays’ Pipeline and The Surfaris’ Wipeout being the other best-known recordings. Latin’ia from The Sentinals offers genuine melodic light and shade, and The Lively Ones power forward on Surf Rider. For collectors, however, the real attractions are the rarities. The Avantis’ Gypsy Surfer, The Illusions’ Jezebel, The Chandelles’ El Gato and Aki Aleong & The Nobles’ Earthquake (search out his Vee Jay album) all add genuine musical and playing interest. The package includes most knowledgeable notes to enhance the experience of a strong genre that grew as Fender guitar and amp technology was also developing. If you haven’t got you feet wet yet, head for this fine wave.
