A professional tenor sax man since 1956, after switching from the trombone, Ervin burned his image as a sax player who played with true emotion onto the public’s mind via his work with bandleaders Charles Mingus and Eric Dolphy. On this release from 1961, Ervin is hot to trot as the leader of a quartet featuring the pianist Horace Parlan, bassist George Tucker and drummer Al Harewood. During his short life, Ervin never made a bad record, but this one is superlative, especially on Poinciana and his own composition, Booker’s Blues.
