The current version of the Spencer Davis Group has been together far longer than the original one and contains great musicians such as Eddie Hardin, who teases out the huge Hammond sound to accompany the towering guitar of the evergreen, everdexterous Miller Anderson. The genial bassist Colin Hodgkinson gels nicely with the newest member, drummer Stef Porzel, while Spencer remains Spencer, the catalyst. SDG’s act is the hits and more, with Hardin’s reflective interlude on Deep In My Despair a standout. As they blasted out Gimme Some Lovin’, the sweaty R&B atmosphere was much as it was when they were playing such subterranean London clubs in the 60s. How nice that some things never change.
