Forging a piano style that initially had many of his fellow musicians believe that he was an introverted, badly dressed lunatic, Monk’s own innovative, but always contentious playing was finally recognised in the late 50s. This album, recorded in 1971, and Monk’s last commercial studio session, was put to tape just two years before his sudden retirement through mental illness. Originally released on the Black Lion label, Something In Blue featured Al McKibbon (bass) and Art Blakey (drums). Full of humour, the LP swings more than anything Monk had created for many years. An intriguing bookend to a career.
