Fabulous and crazy-rare distaff soul sounds

Sister Funk 2

network of hardcore funk enthusiasts are as feared as Ian Wright (as we keep telling you: no, not the footballer). Even such notorious crate diggers as DJ Shadow have had their fingers scorched by his near-psychotic passion for turning up undiscovered vintage sounds under their noses. Wright’s premium taste ensures that this long-awaited second collection of his fastidious Sister Funk unearthings is supreme.

Barely attainable obscurities and one-offs abound and it doesn’t matter if Dolly Gilmore, Sandy Gaye or Florence Trapp aren’t names you know, because you can buy Jazzman compilations on reputation alone. Bouncing through all the funky styles from bumping R&B (Big Ella) to ghetto disco (Vivian Lee & The Hard Drivers), little here can top Honey & The Bees’ gutsy Love Addict or Barbara Trent’s jazzy version of Heartbreak Hotel – surely one the greatest Elvis covers yet discovered.
