Some six years passed between The Dickies’ third studio album, Stukas Over Disneyland, and its 1989 follow-up Second Coming. That may seem surprising at first, unless you know that even as early as Stukas… the world of singer Leonard had become sounpredictable that the album contained both new material and stuff from 1980 recorded by different line-ups.
To his credit, old Len appeared completely unconcerned that A&M, with whom the band had scored their biggest hits, had dropped them like a hot rock after two studio albums. He ploughed on regardless, but it was a hard struggle to keep the good ship Dickies afloat with its fluctuating personnel problems.
Spirits must have been buoyed a little when the band were commissioned to supply the title song for the 1988 movie Killer Klowns From Outer Space. They capitalised with a five-track minialbum on Enigma, all of which is included here as bonus material. As for Second Coming itself, also released by Enigma, it depends how you look at it. Of course there are plenty of humorous moments, but musically, at least, it saw The Dickies taking themselves a mite more seriously than early fans might have expected.
