Doro Pesch had many word-perfect fans waiting for the opportunity to join in on some classic Teutonic metal, and although she only had 45 minutes, she managed to cover her career and new songs, like Night Of The Warlock and Celebrate. Of course, none received a warmer welcome than the evergreen Burning The Witches, with the audience happy to take over. A crowd-pleasing Breaking The Law was a nice bonus, and the set could only end with the classic All We Are. A fabulous return left Saxon with a mountain to climb, and starting with an underwhelming new number, Battalions Of Steel, wasn’t a good beginning. However, when your second song is Heavy Metal Thunder, all is suddenly right in the world. Chuck in crowdpleasers like Strong Arm Of The Law and And The Bands Played On, along with the odd leftfield choice – Ride Like The Wind – and you can forgive Uncle Biff the odd strain. A packed hall revelled in a night of pure heavy metal.
