The Wailers
Dublin UCD
12th February, 2009
View: centre, back
Coming on stage two hours late hardly ingratiated the band to the well-oiled student crowd, but they seemed unperturbed, focusing on testing their material for two warm-up dates before an international tour later in the year. Celebrating Exodus in its entirety, this was a tribute with an exceptional cast, notably living legend Aston Barrett and lead singer Elan Atias. Despite this greatness, The Wailers are a shadow of that original institution. So Much Things To Say was a highlight, and from the stronger flip side of the album we got the more obvious crowd-pleasers. But unlike Motown, reggae requires a powerful lead voice to succeed, and Elan is competent but no Bob.
