The Meteors - Pure Evil Live

Ain’t no grave can hold these psychobilly veterans

Pure Evil Live

Whether The Meteors invented psychobilly or not is debatable, but their loyalty to the cause certainly isn’t. With 30 years, almost as many studio albums and a whopping 6,000 gigs under their belt, they show few signs of slowing down.

The no-frills Pure Evil Live captures them performing a rubber-burning set at last year’s Rock’n’Ink festival in Germany. They still adhere to their strict “no politics or religion” manifesto but, while frontman P Paul Fenech now resembles a tattooed, blood-spitting Aleister Crowley, rather than the portly, cherubic figure of yore, his band’s inspired mash-ups of Link Wray, Screamin’ Lord Sutch and UK Subs remain as incendiary as ever, whether they’re cutting loose on frenzied rockers (Graveyard Stomp, I Am Insane) or crafting (ahem) tender love songs such as If You Don’t Want To Fuck Me, Baby Fuck Off.

If you’re off the blocks early, there’s a deluxe limited edition with a Best Of People Like You Years CD and a Fenech figurine up for grabs. All formats have a generous slew of extras, including additional rare live footage and vintage promos – among them an impressively brawny cover of The Stranglers’ Go Buddy Go. Blood-curdling fun all round, basically.
