New York doo wop at its best

Old Town Doo Wop
Vol 5

This is a welcome reissue of the last of the wonderful doo wop series from the Old Town label, run by the late Hy Weiss. Ace’s series is one of the very best at exhuming what is the absolute essence of the both black and white New York vocal groups from the mid-50s to the early 60s. Alongside alternate cuts of both The Earls’ My Heart’s Desire and The Crowns’ upbeat Opportunity, there are several previously unreleased or hard to find tracks from The Capris, who led the way in the later 60s doo wop revival.

Other strong tracks include The Sharps’ Teenage Girl, The Hummers’ So Strange, Country Boy from The Symbols, and Ruth McFadden & The Supremes’ (notthose ones) Since My Baby’s Been Gone. Collectors could do a lot worse than to treat this as a sampler and then work backwards throughout the series. They won’t be disappointed.
