Like countless others, Medicine Head owe their exposure to John Peel’s ears and championing. Working as a two-man band with no regard for full drums or bass, they hit upon a lo-fi sound that allowed the strengths of their songwriting to carry their work. Laidback, melodic and thoughtful songs such as When Night Falls and Oh My Heart To Peace are performed with minimalist bass drum thumps, guitar and harmonica, but hold more interest than many of today’s limp-voiced superstars can. The Head also worked well on John Lee Hookerstyled blues numbers such as Do It Now, while their single, And The Pictures In The Sky, inhabits Bolan/T.Rex territory without suffering in comparison.
