Surprises galore were in store in the midst of Nena’s 10-date tour, which was all about the music, while putting on a show in a big way. Nena crowned her 30-year long career with suave new arrangements of old faves, guest musicians, and a string quartet to augment her band. She opened by sitting solo on a sofa, greeting everyone with her glorious smile, and instructing a singalong on early hit, Leuchtturm. Musicians gradually joined in, and the elegant vibe of her two-hour show grew with favourites, hidden treasures, striking covers, and new songs that sound like instant classics.
Among the highlights were Hurt, a euphoric My Sweet Lord by Nena’s son, Sakias, and a Heroes encore, preceded by an a capella doo-wop version of 99 Luftballons!
The roar of approval when Nena asked if she should stick around until she’s 70 said it all.
