The Cake were a trio of sassy New Yorkers who were whisked off to the West Coast in the mid-60s by hip producers Greene & Stone, to record at the famed Gold Star studio. The girls were, initially at least, a tight unit who wrote much of their material, but the first album found them being presented in various genres. The first single, Baby That’s Me, a slam-bam Wall Of Sound track written by Jack Nitzsche and Jackie De Shannon, was hardly indicative of them, nor were the New Orleans songs they covered with assistance from Dr John, even though they do sound pretty good on them. Their own approach was found more on interesting gems such as Medieval Love, Rainbow Wood, Sadie or the Caribbean-influenced Extroverted Introvert. Had Greene & Stone really let them develop themselves, like they did with Buffalo Springfield, then The Cake may have stayed together and become a very fine unit. As it is, their only two albums reissued here show distinct and varied talent that takes in baroque, pop and rock, and are never less than interesting. A fine reissue, with fascinating sleevenotes that almost suggest a film script in their own right. Definitely one to check out.
The Cake - More Of Cake Please
