Albino Jamaican DJ/rapper Yellowman was the dancehall darling of the early 80s, but lost ground as the digital rhythms appeared by the middle of the decade. In this DVD/CD set he runs through a high percentage of hits, such as the wildly named Zungguzungzungguzungguzeng, and is in fine form, moving easily around the stage as the very able backing band skank out the classic dancehall rhythms.
Considering it’s a recent recording and he’s had a few health problems. besides 20-odd years passing by, King Yellow still has all the moves and chat, making for a very entertaining watch. We can only presume that the audio CD is the same concert, as there’s only one track list on the back of the box, and the two recordings sound identical. The sound quality is good on both discs, and while the DVD is a little fuzzy round the edges it’s still easily watchable and immensely enjoyable.
It’s good to see a superstar who rose so quickly, then fell almost as rapidly, come back up on such fine form. Based on this performance, although the recordbuying public have passed him by, Yellowman can still draw a large crowd.
