In 1990, Robert Fripp took the decision to reassemble his Crimson avengers, though it wasn’t until 1994 that the tree bore fruit. Crimson had last played live in 1984, so anticipation was high; thankfully, the first dates took place in Argentina, where there awaited a devoted horde of Crimson fans.
This DVD captures both the matinee and evening show from 8 October at the Teatro Broadway theatre in Buenos Aires. Despite the sleevenotes stating “other concert videos might be of a more ‘professional’ standard”, there’s nothing wrong with this multi-camera feast. Fripp, Adrian Belew (vocals/guitar), Trey Gunn (touch guitar), Tony Levin (bass/Chapman Stick), Pat Mastelotto (drums) and Bill Bruford (more drums) parade through a back catalogue that drops anchor in ports visited on their Discipline and Beat LPs from 1981 and ’82, with diversions into 1973’s Larks Tongues In Aspic and the following year’s Red.
Shouldering vocal duties, Belew is the cameras’ main focus, while Fripp – mostly seated – remains the audible driving force. With superb audio quality, the best advice for Crimsons fans is: kick back and enjoy the show – especially Levin and Gunn’s two-Stick improvisation, segueing into Elephant Talk.
