It’s easy to be cynical about this, and some will be. Jazz is often selfindulgent; jazz-rock even more so, and Weather Report became fusion’s standard-bearers after Miles Davis established the basic sound.
The 1976 five-piece were unafraid to experiment with new technology. The shrill noises out of keyboardist Joe Zawinul’s ARP synth, and the soupy chorus effect and crappy overdrive that bassmaster Jaco Pastorius ladled onto his sound seem antiquated today.
