Jerry Lee Lewis - Last Man Standing: Live

The Killer cuts a rug with famous friends

Last Man Standing: Live

The parent duets album may have been several years in the making, but this companion concert came together over just one night last September, a few days before Jerry Lee’s 71st birthday. And although several of the record’s superstars are missing, there’s some stellar talent coming off the subs bench for the first time, including Chris Isaak and Joneses Tom and Norah.

No longer the wild man of his youth, Lewis sits reservedly on his piano stool, but the fire in his belly is still evident on the likes of What’d I Say (with Ivan Neville) and Good Golly Miss Molly (with John Fogerty). For the most part, though, the set leans towards midtempo country, with Willie Nelson, Don Henley and the aforementioned Norah cuddling up to the maestro on Hank Williams covers.

The concert numbers are interspersed with filmed tributes. Tom Jones reveals that it was Jerry Lee’s version of Green Green Grass Of Home that inspired his own recording of the song, while Isaak gushes how the rock’n’roll legend “made my life”.
