A very frail Johnny was led to the stage by his crew but, almost miraculously, once sat down, started running his fingers over the fretboard with abandon. Backed by an empathetic trio/ duo, Johnny was given free rein to showcase his unhindered fluency on a set-list stretching across his recording career, with highlights including Miss Ann, Hoochie Coochie Man, the stunning slow blues Black Jack, and a cover of It’s All Over Now. Come the encores, Johnny signed off with his slideguitar tour de force reworking of Highway 61 Revisited. At the close of his 80-minute spectacular, there was a palpable sense of witnessing something special: the triumph of talent over adversity. Long live the legend!
