The Pizza Express, set in the basement of a West End restaurant, offers dining with entertainment, in this case Savoretti, serving up 11 tracks from his new Before The Storm. And his initial solo, poetic acoustic set was a fine taster of what was to come. The main course saw the singer-guitarist joined by his band, The Dirty Romantics, complete with a double-bass that had things hotting up. Savoretti showcased his versatility, ranging in style from James Blunt to Tom Waits to Springsteen. Take Me Home had a touch of Bob Seger, and The Proposal bore the stamp of Californian Dreamin’, with its easy-flowing vibe.
The rockabilly swing of Knock Knock had some punters jiving, and the main set ended with a standing ovation on Come Shine A Light. More was demanded and the audience got their just dessert with three encores. First, Savoretti solo on piano for Crazy Town, before the band returned for the new album’s gritty title track and a debut live airing of Lifetime, Savoretti and co ticking all the right boxes.
