Various Artists - It Came From The Garage: Nuggets From Southern California

Three chords and not afraid to use them.

Mid-60s America saw a huge growth of young bands in the wake of The Rolling Stones’ eventual American breakthrough, and the Downey label attracted their fair share of these aspirants. With its range of rare and obscure groups, this 24-track collection will attract garage fans everywhere.

The Last Word have a moody intensity on Sleepy Hollow, and then work in Wooly Bully-mode on Jump Point & Shout. Sir Frog & The Toads introduce The Frog as a new dance (just imagine… no, don’t); Johnny MacRae somehow manages to blend Eddie Cochran influences with something like The Hully Gully, while anticipating a T.Rex boogie sound; The New Breed shamelessly ape The Syndicate Of Sound’s Little Girl on I’ll Still Be Waiting There. So, if these reference points and doses of fuzz and Farfisa organ ring your chimes, then this one is for you.
