Cherry Red have issued over 25 albums in their Goth Collectors series, showcasing the various sallow, Eldritch-limbed youths that twitched in dark places taking inspiration from the likes of Bauhaus and supernatural literature. The In Goth Daze compilation has been released before and offers an excellent overview of one corner of the vast graveyard of goth bands, including Alien Sex Fiends’ Can’t Stop Smoking, Specimen’s Sharp Teeth Pretty Teeth and Skeletal Family’s Alone She Cries. It’s just a shame that Bauhaus are only represented by their poorest track, Boys, but that is probably thanks to licensing restrictions.
Saying that, in throwing a 22- track DVD into the mix, Cherry Red have really added flesh to these excellent bones. It would be best to say that most of the bands performed as if ‘in a goth daze’, rather than being energetic bloodsuckers, but it’s great to see the likes of Flesh For Lulu, Skeletal Family, Virgin Prunes, Play Dead and Alien Sex Fiend strut their stuff. Ausgang’s Weight is a great song with a stunning video and well worth watching. This is mega value for money, although seeing Nico at the end of the line is a sad sight indeed.
