If there is a theme to be found here beyond Goffin & King’s huge talent, it’s that the compilers have sought to include lesser known versions of some songs that are better known elsewhere. There is, however, no diminution of quality, as standards throughout are splendid. We get the Phil Spector-produced He Knows I Love Him Too Much from Ex- Chantel Arlene Smith, Bobby Vee’s original of Go Away Little Girl, and the fab beat ballad Make The Night A Little Longer from Tammy Montgomery.
Fans of the era of emergent soul will love Ben E King’s Tell Daddy, Chuck Jackson’s I Need You, and Freddie Scott’s Brand New World, while girlie fans get Connie Stevens’ version of the sumptuous They’re Jealous Of Me and That Boy I Used To Know from Andrea Carroll. Strength in depth comes with tracks from The Turtles, The Rising Sons, Jackie De Shannon, Jan & Dean and many more, making this pretty essential for collectors who hope that this particular arm of Ace’s songwriter series will run and run. Honey and wine, indeed.
