Mim Grey - Grey Matters

Session singer takes the spotlight in her stride Previously lending her voice to such A-listers as Paul McCartney and Kylie Minogue, Barnet-born Grey strikes out on her own with a set of gentle country-tinged strummers.

But there’s more to Mim than most of the mass-produced saloon gals on the block, as an innate Englishness sneaks its way into the songs.

Having said that, it’s a Canadian songstress that makes her presence felt on one of the many stand-out tracks; One More Time is so up-front in its declaration for the healing powers of Joni Mitchell’s music that its inclusion of snippets of the grand dame’s own lyrics results in a co-writing credit. But it’s all Mim on the stoic wronged woman lament Too Pretty To Cry and dream-following passions of The Wind Keeps Callin’.

Female singer-songwriters make up a pretty busy field these days, but Grey clearly has more to offer than most. You may hear of her being heralded as a British Norah Jones, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as that’s the impressively high benchmark she appears to be heading towards with relative ease.
