A retro evening of ex-punkers started with a short set from The Slits’ Viv Albertine. Taking a singer-songwriter approach, tomboy lyrics and bitterness over a tuneless guitar raised a couple of cheers. The former Sex Pistols bassist followed and was on vocal/guitar duty, his band (coming on-stage to circus music) featuring a lead guitar, bass, drums and female backing singers. The set was tight and featured good melodies, concentrating on Matlock’s post-Pistols’ work, with Hard Work, Get What We Get and Idiot standing out. Rock with touches of punk, new wave and pub-rock, the crowd certainly enjoyed it. More Pistols wouldn’t have gone amiss, but a stirring Pretty Vacant encore saw the evening finish on a high.
