Stefan Grossman has long been respected as one of the best blues guitarists, and this collection, mixing several instrumentals with its vocal tracks, is ample evidence of his writing and playing abilities. With able support from the likes of Gerry Conway, Pat Donaldson and even Richard Thompson on the last four tracks, this comes close to being a masterclass. Good as it is, though, some more variety of sound and feel would have been beneficial.
Waterfalls is an attractive and melodic guitar-only tune, while Odyssey becomes electric with contrasting sections after a lengthy intro piece. Grossman’s instrumentals probably have the edge over his songs. Though both are well formed, you may find yourself too aware of the tone of the metal strings at times, and begin hoping for warmer sounds. Blues and roots guitar fans will enjoy this, but others will likely tire quickly.
