Recorded in a barn in Shropshire in a week in 2006, Fibre marks the first collaboration between legendary 73-year-old Krautrock composer Roedelius and British film scorer George Taylor, known to all except his mum as Noh1.
Though recorded quickly, the album took two years to mix, and that’s where you can really hear the detail. It has an agreeable, reserved ambience that veers from reference points such as Boards Of Canada to incidental music for Mary, Mungo & Midge. Though Roedelius is somewhere near his 100th album, his contributions are fresh and exciting, playing for the first time ever in the studio with a live drum kit. It works best on Cast Away and A Long Trip, which highlights Noh1’s film scoring abilities. The nagging bass of Anytime Soon builds from a slight piano piece to, if not exactly a stomp, an accomplished upbeat moment. Despite fundamentally being a loose studio improvisation, Noh1 and guitarist Jez Coad have put it together showcasing Roedelius’ piano beautifully. Fibre is a delicate work that begs repeated listening.
