Dahlstrom cut four fine albums during the 70s, and these 20 tracks pick from each of them, with full sleevenotes rounding things out.
Put simply, Dahlstrom’s writing and strong vocal delivery sits firmly at the intelligent end of the folk spectrum, the songs offering melody, lyrical depth and perceptive emotional explorations. She wrote both alone and with key partners, enjoying a spell as a Motown staff writer along the way. Having transformed Veronique Sansan’s Amoureuse into the English-language Emotion, Dahlstrom scored her biggest hit, while also growing in confidence to continue down her own path.
Songs here vary from the comparatively simple Rider, through the more leftfield Give Him Time, to Sending My Good Thoughts To You, which was written for friend Jim Croce. Other gems such as This Isn’t An Ordinary Love Song, with its attractive rhyming, set this release as a most worthy addition to Rev-Ola’s series of female folksinger releases.
