Dark and brooding, or downright mad, the image-conscious Sartain gave a free and understated performance. In theory, it was to promote the Legacy Of Hospitality collection of out-takes from the past decade. But the opening solo set was initially a short celebration of his career, with great songs like Atheist Funeral alongside his singing-cowboy roots, with Roy Rogers’ Blue Prairie and Dust – none from the current album! However, the second stint, with a bassist and drummer, was pure punk. Driving, rhythmic guitar, reminiscent of The Ramones or Sex Pistols, over mumbled lyrics, was pure vigour. I Don’t Wanna Go To The Party and Boo Hoo Hoo were thumping, and Sartain’s energy enthralled the crowd, which they thrived on before revelling in the climax of the recent radio-friendly 7”, Fuck Friday.
