This, Jones’ third solo album from 1969, follows the pattern set by its predecessors My Way and Love Me, Love My Friends with the original Columbia album augmented by non-LP singles including, in this case, And The Sun Will Shine and The Dog Presides, which features Jeff Beck on guitar and Paul McCartney on drums. Then there’s previously unreleased tracks and the Sweden-only single Shake A Hand/ Cat’s Eyes.
With its full-on swinging 60s kitchen sink-and-all production style courtesy of Mike Leander, and an eclectic, cover-all-bases repertoire straddling R&B, pop, soul and blues, Come Into My Music Box takes its cues from Jones’ previous solo albums. Covers of then-recent chart hits from the likes of The Band, The Foundations, Marvin Gaye and, freakiest of all, the reverb-soaked reworking of Procol Harum’s Homburg sit shoulder to shoulder with quirky originals including the title song from the film The Committee and I’m Here To Nudge Your Mind.
The approach seems to be to come at the listener from just about every direction imaginable, with Jones’ highly dramatic vocals always well to the fore. A mildly fascinating and wildly eclectic trip inside the dizzy world of all things Brit pop circa 1969.
