There’s nothing like a Tory government to bring out the best in Billy Bragg, and the intimate Fleece was completely rammed. The last night of his Left Field In Motion Tour, Bragg had spent the day with Occupy Bristol and took to the stage looking content in his ‘job’ of singer/songwriter. At 53, he’s still genuinely excited at interacting with a crowd, one feeding off the other, creating an enjoyable atmosphere. Bragg kept going for 90 minutes, from the opener It Says Here, via Never Buy The Sun and I Keep Faith, to The Great Leap Forwards (with new lyrics) and the finale, We Are The 99%, on which he was joined by his support acts. A Bragg gig wouldn’t be complete without the love songs that fans enjoy as much the politics. St. Swithin’s Day, Greetings To The New Brunette and the brilliant Must I Paint You A Picture sat comfortably alongside singalong faves To Have And To Have Not and There Is Power In A Union.
