Originally released on blues label Indigo in 2001, this expanded reissue comprises the 15-track album especially recorded for the project, plus two from-the-vaults antiques dusted down for the occasion, and which predate the other tracks by almost 30 years.
Originally the brainchild of Harry Lang, lead singer of Mo’ Indigo, who themselves feature on the tracklisting, and overseen by producer and bandleader Fred James, the album brings together a the likes of Stan Webb, Earl Green, Charles Walker, Paul Lamb, Johnny Jones, Al Garner, Ruby Turner, Earl Gaines and Roscoe Shelton, under the common goal of bluesifying The Beatles. By and large, the accent is on laidback and soulful reworkings of the originals, with the pick of the bunch being Charles Walker’s Don’t Let Me Down, Johnny Jones’ Come Together and Tony Wilson’s 1968 version of I Feel Fine, which, incidentally, boasts Albert Lee, Nicky Hopkins and Ian Paice among its session players. And let’s not forget Lee Moses late-60s heavy funk instrumental version of Day Tripper.
