Pisces - A Lovely Sight

Homespun Illinois psych with plenty of bite

Hailing from the “ghostown” of Rockford, Illinois, Pisces were a decidedly unnerving combo. Drawing as much from this side of the Atlantic as from their own West Coast, they peddled a fairly unique acid/folk mix that remains beguiling and special.

The opener kicks off with fuzz guitar and drums, building a tribal beat for the ghostly vocals of Linda Bruner (think Third Ear Band fronted by Hope Sandoval). It’s unsettling and arresting stuff. Elsewhere, tracks laid down at the time glisten with an intensity and depth few of the jolly West Coast lot managed – perhaps it just rains more in Illinois. Children Kiss Your Mother Goodnight is, again, disconcerting, but the highlight, Motley Mary Ann shows they had style to infuse with the dark stuff.

Here imagining what a Pisces album might have sounded like by collating most of their recorded work, Numero have here triumphed in unearthing some seriously good psych that will turn a lot of people on.
