MY JUG HELL
I was amused to see that “plaque” gaffa’d to the fence at the site of the Toby Jug pub in beautiful downtown Tolworth [Letters, RC 400]. I lived in Ewell, down the road. I remember walking past the Toby Jug with a mate – I now realise on the night of that Bowie gig – and stopping to read the board outside for Bowie’s imminent appearance. We remembered him from Space Oddity a couple of years before, but decided not to bother: he was a one-hit wonder… who knew?! Some time later we saw the legendary TOTP Starman performance and became fans. Later still, the Toby Jug was the scene of many punk gigs, and I saw the Stranglers, Squeeze, Wayne County, The Vibrators and others now forgotten. Wish we’d gone in on that seminal Ziggy night though.
