MOODY TOPS
I’m pretty sure Mike Hurst (Oldies, RC 337) is wrong when he says that he is the only white producer ever to have worked with the Four Tops. In 1971 the Four Tops had a Top 10 hit with a Moody Blues B-side, A Simple Game, which was produced by Tony Clarke, the producer responsible for the Moody Blues ‘core seven’ albums. The song had been written by Mike Pinder, and The Four Tops’ version also had another Pinder song, So Deep Within You, originally on The Moodies’ Threshold Of A Dream album, as the Bside. Legend has it that The Moody Blues also contributed to the vocal harmonies on the Tops’ versions of both songs, making them the only white vocalists to sing on their recordings up to that point.
