FLOYD VS BEARS

Let me confess that I have handed over my £90 for the Immersion version of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon. It will sit nicely alongside the many and varied versions of this album that I own. There is a lot of content previously only available on bootlegs, but I can’t ignore the fact that this album was released nearly 40 years ago and has been reissued on many occasions. As a collector I love this sort of thing. But as music lover, am I short-changing myself?

What could I do with my £90 if I wanted something new? I could buy the new Opeth deluxe box set and a few more LPs or CDs. But the internet has ensured there is lots of new music to be had, much of it free. For those of us that like physical formats, there is a growing network of micro independents releasing great material. These labels’ low-run editions can be picked up for just a few pounds. Google Apollolaan, Heat Death, Home Normal, Under The Spire or Rural Colours to see a fraction of what is going on. Is it any good? Some is wonderful and some I don’t get. For £5 or £6 there’s not much to lose!

Is it collectable? Try tracking down an original copy of Message To Bears’ Departures, released as an elaborately packaged CD on Dead Pilot. Can’t find one? Neither could I. Fortunately, this beautiful album was reissued on audiophile vinyl. Don’t be surprised if it appears as a three-figure entry in a future RRPG. After all, how many people bought Monster Movie by Can or Caedmon’s album when they were released?

RC, how about an article on these labels and artists? RC readers – how about supporting these guys by splashing out a fiver? How to choose? Look for an honest review. Failing that, pick the one with the nicest sleeve! Now I wonder if the postie has delivered that Floyd album?
