FAKE QUARRYMEN
I have been the victim of a cruel hoax. Rummaging through the Methodist Church Charity Shop in Archway, I was surprised to come across a 78rpm record with typed labels that suggested it was the legendary Quarrymen acetate from 1958. Unfortunately I didn’t have a 78rpm turntable on which to play it. I finally picked one up this week and, hands trembling with expectation, I played the record… Tragically, it’s either a doctored Joe Loss 78, or The Quarrymen had a very large string section and no sense of melody.
The Quarrymen, the first ‘Beatles’ record, is rarest collectable of all, and the only known genuine copy is in the possession of P McCartney Esq. Paul produced a limited edition run of reproduction copies, but there are many fakes out there. – Ed
