DEVIL IN THE DETAIL

As the prices achieved for collectable UK albums can be significantly more for first pressings and heavily influenced by a vendor who is a selfappointed expert on the relevant (sometimes numerous) details, perhaps you could consider a series of articles to help keep collectors informed?

Two examples come to mind: A while ago I bought an ‘original’ Excellent (aren’t they all these days?!) Small Faces Ogdens album with a mediocre disc but a lovely cover - which I now think is a reissue, but how do I tell? Also the Rare Record Price Guide implies that the difference between the first and the later pressings of Buddy Holly’s first album lies solely in the disc (Vogue Coral then Coral) whereas the earlier cover is laminated back and front, later front only.

I know it’s a bit of a minefield and the list is near endless, but I think you could do more to help and I’m sure knowledgeable readers’ contributions would be welcome. The devil, as they say, is in the detail.
