Unseen Queen
PETER HINCE, Queen’s roadie and photographer during their glory days, talks RC through some of the classic photos in his archive. Interview by Tim Jones.
Peter Hince’s Queen: The Unseen Archive photo exhibition is at the Proud Central Gallery on London’s John Adam Street from 30 July to 13 September. “It’ll be about 50-55 photos, 20 colour and 35 black and white. 90% of them are unpublished and unseen, says Peter. “I’ve had offers for my memoirs , but it’s got to be the right offer. It’d be nice to publish it, but it’s not a kissand- tell or a book of facts and figures. It’s a story of what it’s like to live that life, with all the observations and humour of that parallel world. I’ve read so-called ‘memoirs’, but I wanted to do something different”.
Do you still have much memorabilia? If I still had all of it I could retire. But I sold a lot of my stuff to collectors, when I needed a new fridge and stuff like that! I’ve still got a blue Bohemian Rhapsody No. 195 that Freddie gave me, picture discs, and I’ve got bits and bobs of cassettes, different versions. And I also used to have tapes of the band arguing in the studio and that, but that’s sadly gone.
